      Shutting Down Salvage   03/05/2018

Well...I've always hoped I wouldn't have to make this post, but I think it's time. Unfortunately, I'm going to be shutting down the server.  I just don't have enough time to bring you all the content you deserve.  It really does suck because I've put a bunch of work into the server, the website, and everything else that goes along with it, but it's time to accept it.  Besides not having enough time to develop what needs to be developed, the multiple $300 15-day advertisements, expensive premium listings, and other forms of marketing weren't really working for us, so it's hard to have the motivation to continue. What kept me going was you all, the players.  I loved the reactions I received after each update and the overall support for wanting to see us grow.  Many of you all have donated to help keep the server running, and it worked out for a long time, but we were just never able to get over that 25 online threshold.  Regardless, thank you to our generous donators.  We would not have made it this far without you all.  I must say it again...thank you. At one time, our community was strong and it seemed like only a matter of time before we would grow bigger, but something happened and that time has passed.  Other servers nowadays are just too far ahead of us with OSRS content that it's hard to compete.  Let alone, OSRS has snagged a bunch of private server players again because of how much content Jagex's team is pumping into it.  As a one-owner/developer private server, it's just too much to keep up with.  These other servers have entire teams on payroll thanks to their years of success.  It's difficult to measure up to these guys starting out by myself and not having enough income to support a few other developers. As far as the future goes, my vision is muddy.  I would like to think I'd be able to re-launch the server in the future once I have more time, but as a full-time employee of a tech company where I do software development 40+ hours a week, I'd like my hobbies/free time to not include programming.  If I do re-launch, you'll receive an email saying so.  Until then, I recommend checking out some of these other servers which I've been playing around on to try to spawn some ideas: Battlescape - It's a nice old school server with a ton of new OSRS features, but they do seem to pad their player count (I literally counted 35 people when it said over 100 were online). Survive-RS - This is a brand new server with a bunch of potential.  It's a survival-style take on OSRS, where there's zombies all over the place and you have to eat to replensih energy and scavenge for your equipment.  It's currently in beta, so there are some bugs, but the gameplay is very fun.  I see some similar qualities to myself in the owner as well. *Note, I was not paid to link these...I just enjoyed playing them. The website will be up until the middle of April and I'll be taking the server offline today.  Thank you to everyone who brought wonderful suggestions to the game and an awesome personality to the community.  Maybe we'll see each other again on another go around.  On behalf of the rest of the Salvage staff, thank you and farewell.   -Justin

In-game Name: Big Don Total Time Played (provide screenshot): 85 hours, see attached image. Timezone: UTC-5:00 Age: 22 Staff Experience (Please do not disclose server names:) Help staff for 2 servers and I was also a Moderator in real runescape until I stepped down because I had moved to private servers. How many hours a day do you spend on Salvage? varies but usually several hours a day during the week, I don't play much during the weekend because that is when I go out. What time(s) are you usually on Salvage? (e.g 3am-7am) around 9am-4pm and then sometimes from 8pm-11pm. Are there any days that you are unable to play Salvage? not unable, but there are days that I don't get on. I am on most days though. Have you ever been warned or infracted by a staff member on Salvage? (If yes, please explain.): I have not been warned or infracted. What 5 qualities do you feel you possess that will make you an exemplary Salvage staff member? 1) I like to help new people get their footing in servers. 2) I am understanding of other people and don't get flustered or frustrated by others. 3) I have leadership qualities, I was the captain of my basketball team in high school and I am head of the sales team at the company I work for. 4) I'm collected, so if faced with an issue I would never make an impulse decision. 5) I am an extrovert which helps with meeting new players and making them feel welcome. In 3 short paragraphs, why do you feel you are right for the position you wish to acquire?: I am older which helps since I will not be acting like a child on the server. I am able to make new players feel welcome on the servers which will hopefully make them want to stay so that we can build a bigger community. A lot of people that are joining this private server are going to be a little older which will make it easy for me to connect to them. The leadership roles that I have held and currently hold will help in this position because staff need to help new players and need to lead by example. If staff just sits back and isn't really involved then players think they can do whatever they want. I will be able to show new players what is right and wrong behavior on the server in a nice manor. Being able to tell someone how to do something without sounding demeaning is very important. I also believe that being calm and collected is very important when dealing with issues. Jumping the gun can cause a lot of irreversible damage to a server by losing not only the players that are having a problem, but other players that see what happens and get disheartened by the staffs actions. I believe that this will help me resolve issues easier and make everyone possible happy in the situation. What do you hope to achieve if you are promoted?: I want to be able to show new players that there is an active staff base and be able to somewhat control situations if higher staff is unavailable. I witnessed first hand a player duping and a couple days went by with no staff on to help neutralize the situation. I want to be able to snuff that kind of thing before it gets out of hand. I saw that a couple of people quit due to the incident and I want to be there to set things straight. I felt helpless during the whole event as I watched the player mislead new players and give them duped items and there was nothing I could do. If there is one rule you wish to change or address, what rule would it be? (Must answer) I believe that the AFK rule could be a little better defined. I like to afk while skilling and I'm not sure where the line is drawn when it comes to prolonged afking. Id like to add that as long as someone is earning exp, they can be afk. A lot of skills are pretty boring and most people do other things while skilling. How do you feel about respect, loyalty, and rule enforcement as a staff member? rule enforcement is a must and respect and loyalty are what keep a server running. Respect goes both ways for staff, staff should be respected and they should respect all of the players on the server. Staff must be loyal to a server so they will be on during issues and will devote their time needed to the server. Rule enforcement is the name of the game for the staff. Without the rules, players can just run the server into the ground because most players will quit. I want to help this server in any way I can. This is my favorite server I have ever played and I want to see it flourish.
